Helical Piles

A helical pile is a type of deep foundation system consisting of a steel shaft with helical plates that is screwed into the ground to provide structural support or resisting tension forces.

How It's Used

A helical pile is a type of deep foundation system consisting of a round or square steel shaft with welded helical plates that is advanced into the ground via a hydraulic gear motor to provide structural support or resisting tension forces.Bearing capacity is achieved via the product of measured installation torque and a torque factor (Kt) that is specific to the pile shaft diameter.

Helical Piles Applications

This factory-manufactured steel foundation system, consisting of a central shaft with one or more helix-shaped bearing plates welded to the lead section, can be used for a range of applications. Many types of foundations can benefit from the stabilization that helical piles offer, from residential and luxury homes to commercial buildings, solar foundations, walkways and boardwalks, agricultural storage bins, and pipelines. Brackets at the tops of the piles are cast directly into grade beams and walls or attached via retrofit brackets to existing foundations, making helical piles ideal either for new construction or retrofit applications.

Helical Piles PROCESS

Engineered and ICC-evaluated steel elements consist of a central shaft with one or more helix-shaped bearing plates. These are welded to the lead section and advanced into the subgrade utilizing specialized hydraulic gear motors and torque transducer monitors. Torque transducers allow monitoring installation torque, rather than antiquated shear-pin or differential hydraulic pressure methods. Extending the pile to competent load-bearing soils meets the project’s design depth and capacity. Extension shafts (with or without additional helices) are added until the design torque correlation is met. The pile is then terminated with the appropriate bracket applicable to the job.

Advantages of Helical Piles

  • Fast installation

  • Zero spoils, which allows the pile to be installed in contaminated soils

  • Can be loaded immediately

  • Limited excavation is required, resulting in minimal site disturbance

  • Well suited to remote sites

  • Appropriate for both new construction or retrofit applications
